ABA Annual Meeting & ONUL Alumni

Rick Bales_blogI’m en route now to San Francisco for the ABA Annual Meeting.  If you will be there, drop me an email and let’s find a way to meet up.  I’m looking forward to meeting this afternoon with ONUL alumni Kelly Savage Day, then joining the leadership of the Ohio State Bar Association for dinner.

SEALS Annual Confernce & ONUL Alumni

Rick Bales_blogI had the pleasure of spending the first half of this week in South Florida, moderating several panels at the Southeastern Association of Law Schools (SEALS) annual conference and meeting with ONUL alumni John Genovese and Alan Ciklin.  Alumni like John and Alan make us all proud to be part of the ONUL family.  One of my primary focuses as new dean will be ensuring that alumni feel connected to their school.  In many ways, it’s the best part of being a dean — because it means meeting really interesting people, learning about their experiences at ONUL, and sharing with them the many exciting things happening now at ONUL.  I’m looking forward to meeting many more ONUL alumni in the near future.

Inaugural Post as Dean

Rick Bales_blogI’m pleased to share, in this my inaugural Dean’s Blog post, the kind of email that every teacher dreams of receiving:

Professor Bales: I was a mediocre civ pro student of yours in Fall 2010-Spring 2011. Unfortunately, I royally screwed up the Fall 2010 final. Fortunately for me, I learned the ins and outs of certifying a 23(b)(3) class action during the group take-home midterm you gave. I didn’t study it at all for the bar exam given this week besides looking over a Barbri handout. For whatever reason, the Tennessee Bar Examiners had half a question on certifying a mass tort under the Federal Rule. They hadn’t tested on class actions in over 20+ years and generally focus on state civ pro. I just wanted to thank you. Yesterday, I was glad I had a great civ pro professor. Of all of the folks I talked to, I was the only one who correctly hit all of the elements.

I know many ONUL graduates can say the same of their ONUL faculty.  It’s one of the many reasons I’m proud to be part of the ONUL family.
